Local rules
Contact the local host or village authority before visiting. Ask permission for photography and for access to private or ceremonial places. A village listing is not blanket visitor permission. Access By road Travel south toward Brokopondo on the Afobaka Road. Turn onto the local road toward Asigron. The village is commonly described as approximately 10 km from the Afobaka Road. Use a suitable vehicle, especially during heavy rain. Confirm road condition, bridge condition and the correct village entrance before departure. Avoid arriving after dark unless a local host has confirmed access. By river Because Asigron lies along the Suriname River, local boat access may be possible. Arrange this through a local boat captain or community contact. Confirm: Boarding point. Water level and weather. Boat condition and fuel. Life jackets. Return time. Emergency communication. Permission for landing and photography. Air access There is no confirmed public airstrip inside Asigron. The nearest aviation options are generally in the Afobaka/Brokopondo area, but flight and road/boat connections must be arranged separately. Local rules and community protocol Asigron is a traditional Saamaka community. There is no single public rule sheet covering all village activities, so confirm current rules with the captain, basja or another authorized community representative. Entry and introductions Contact the captain, basja or local host before entering for fieldwork, interviews, commercial activity or organized visits. State your identity, organisation, purpose, dates, group size, transport and equipment. Ask whether a formal village meeting or krutu is required. Do not bypass traditional authority when your activity concerns community land, resources, development or public facilities. Allow time for internal community consultation before expecting a decision. A traditional-authority study explains that the krutu is an important decision-making forum and that agreements involving a community should follow the relevant traditional structures. Photography, research and commercial activity Ask before photographing people, houses, ceremonies, burials, elders or children. Obtain explicit permission for filming, drone flights, mapping, interviews, surveys and research. Explain how recordings, GPS points and personal information will be stored and used. Do not publish sensitive cultural, land-use or sacred-site information without consent. Obtain separate authorization for mining, forestry, construction, tourism, commercial filming or development activities. Do not collect plants, artefacts, timber, wildlife or cultural objects. Cultural and environmental conduct Respect ceremonies, mourning periods, religious practices and quiet hours. Do not enter sacred places, burial grounds, private yards or restricted forest areas without permission. Dress modestly and follow local guidance. Keep the village and river clean. Do not discharge fuel, oil, soap, sewage or rubbish into the Suriname River. Use designated fire and sanitation areas. Do not disturb fishing, hunting, farming or family activities. Follow instructions from the Captain, Basja, host and boat operator. Fieldwork and emergency checklist Before visiting Asigron, confirm: Current captain or authorized community contact. Permission for your planned activity. Exact road entrance and GPS pin. Current road and bridge conditions. Medical Mission clinic availability at +597 882-6341. Transport and emergency vehicle. Mobile coverage or backup communication. Water, food, first-aid and mosquito protection. Photography, drone and data-consent arrangements. Return route and departure time.

A03Water recreation and river hazardsCheck physical hazards and fresh-water health risks before an activity.
Ask the guide about currents, rocks, water levels and safe access before any water activity. Wear suitable flotation equipment for boating. Do not dive into unfamiliar water or enter rapids to swim or bathe, and keep children under close supervision. CDC advises avoiding swimming in unchlorinated rivers, lakes and ponds in Suriname because fresh water can carry infections. A locally designated swimming spot does not establish water quality.
