Braak/Calcutta Airstrip

Saramacca

Braak Airport (also called Braak/Calcutta Airstrip) is a small, public-use airstrip serving the resort (village) of Calcutta in the Saramacca District of Suriname. It is one of many interior/coastal airstrips managed under Suriname’s civil aviation system and is used mainly by small general-aviation and charter aircraft.

Local rules

1. General access Braak is a public aerodrome in Suriname’s domestic network, but like most interior strips it is not a port of entry for international flights. International operations must clear customs/immigration at designated airports (e.g., Johan Adolf Pengel International, Zorg en Hoop for certain flights) before proceeding domestically. The airstrip is primarily used by domestic general aviation, charter, and medevac-type operations serving the local community and surrounding plantations/resorts. 2. Prior Permission Required (PPR) / permits Suriname requires prior permission for most non-scheduled operations: The Civil Aviation Department (CADSUR) and flight-support providers state that prior permission is required for private, charter, and non-scheduled flights to Suriname airstrips, including interior locations. For domestic flights within Suriname’s FIR, operators typically coordinate with: CADSUR – Air Transport / Aerodrome Department, and/or Local operators (e.g., Gum Air, Blue Wing) who handle interior strip permissions routinely. While Braak itself may not have a published “PPR” notice in open sources, standard practice for Suriname interior airstrips is: File a flight plan / notify ATS. Obtain any required landing permission through CADSUR or your local handling agent. Confirm current status (usable runway, any temporary closures) via AIS/NOTAM before flight. 3. Operating rules (high level) Flights in Suriname must comply with Suriname Civil Aviation Regulations (CARS), including visual flight rules (VFR) limitations and any night-VFR approvals via ATS. For domestic interior flights, there is a flat landing/air-navigation charge structure (e.g., small, fixed fee per round trip for interior destinations), administered by CADSUR.

Nearest help

Calcutta is an established resort with basic local services: Police: There is a police post in Calcutta (“Politiepost Calcutta”) located in the resort itself, providing first-line security and emergency contact for the area. Medical care: Calcutta has a Regional Health Service (RGD) polyclinic, which was thoroughly renovated in 2025 and serves as the primary local medical facility for the community. Larger hospitals: For more advanced care, patients are typically referred to facilities in Paramaribo (e.g., ‘s Lands Hospitaal and other clinics), reachable by road or air via the main airports near the capital. Because Braak is essentially an airstrip in a small resort, there is no airport fire service, rescue unit, or 24‑hour staffed tower on site; emergency response relies on the local police post, RGD clinic, and regional services.
