Before a journey through Brownsweg, Atjoni or the Upper Suriname River, agree the route and arrival arrangements with your operator. Write down the destination, boarding point, guide or boat operator, and expected arrival time.

  • Ask who will check that you arrived and what they will do if you are overdue. Tell that person when plans change.
  • Discuss weather, water levels, boat capacity and life jackets before departure. Wear a correctly fitted life jacket throughout the boat journey.
  • Save your lodge and operator numbers, the relevant clinic contact and a route map while you have internet. Keep a paper copy of the essential details.
  • Charge your phone and power bank. Ask what communication equipment the operator uses where mobile coverage is absent.
  • Keep drinking water, necessary personal medicines and rain protection accessible in a waterproof bag.

A map pin helps describe a place; ask your operator to confirm the actual landing and onward transfer. If conditions or essential safety equipment are unsuitable, ask to delay departure. Once you arrive, let your agreed contact know.

• G06Safer road transfers and boardingAgree your pickup point, destination and fare with the transport provider before departure.

Agree your pickup point, destination and fare with the transport provider before departure. Use an established operator or a taxi arranged through your accommodation. Ask who is driving and how you can contact the provider if the vehicle or meeting point changes.

Choose a vehicle with a working seat belt for every passenger and use it throughout the trip. Avoid an overcrowded vehicle and keep bags from blocking exits. Allow extra travel time for poor surfaces, rain and stops. Road lighting and conditions can be limited; discuss a daylight travel plan with your operator, especially for unfamiliar routes.

At a river transfer, wait until the boat is stationary and the operator invites you aboard. Use the landing point the operator identifies, accept boarding assistance and move one person at a time. Put on your life jacket before boarding and let the crew secure and balance luggage.

Remain seated while travelling and keep hands inside the boat. If boarding feels unstable, essential equipment is missing or the operator changes the agreed plan, stop and ask for the issue to be resolved before continuing.
