Kadjoe is a small locality/village in the Brownsweg resort, Brokopondo District. It is part of a group of Maroon settlements created or reorganized around Brownsweg after communities were displaced by the construction of the Afobaka Dam and formation of the Brokopondo Reservoir. Local rules
Contact the local host or village authority before visiting. Ask permission for photography and for access to private or ceremonial places. Access Road access: Kadjoe is reached through the Brownsweg road network from the Afobaka Road. Before travelling: Carry spare fuel, water, a spare tire and basic tools. Avoid unplanned night travel. Save the coordinates offline because mobile coverage may be inconsistent. Do not drive onto private, mining, concession or restricted land without permission. Community access Kadjoe is not a conventional tourist attraction. Arrange access beforehand if you intend to: - Visit homes or village facilities. - Conduct interviews or research. - Photograph or film. - Use a drone. - Map land or resources. - Organize a commercial or development activity. - Enter abandoned mining areas or forest areas. - Collect samples, plants, artefacts or cultural material. Local rules and protocol The community’s complete current rules are not publicly available. Confirm them with the captain, village elders, basja or authorized community representative. Entry and introductions: - Introduce yourself and your organization before entering. - Explain your purpose, dates, group size, vehicle, equipment and intended activities. - Request permission before photographing people, homes, ceremonies, churches, schools or community meetings. - Ask whether a formal meeting or community approval is required. - Do not bypass local leadership in matters affecting land, resources or community members. - Follow instructions from the captain, basja, elders and district authorities. Cultural and environmental conduct: - Respect local privacy, family areas, ceremonies and mourning periods. - Do not enter burial grounds, sacred areas or private yards without permission. - Do not remove plants, timber, artefacts, wildlife, soil or mining material. - Do not enter abandoned mine shafts or pits. - Do not operate drones or professional recording equipment without consent. - Keep noise low and avoid disturbing residents. - Take all rubbish with you. - Do not discharge fuel, oil, soap or waste into waterways. - Follow local fishing, hunting and forest-use restrictions. Safety: - Carry drinking water, insect repellent, first aid and personal medication. - Watch for open pits, unstable ground, snakes, insects and contaminated or stagnant water. - Do not swim in unknown ponds, pits or creeks. - Do not visit active or abandoned mining areas without a knowledgeable local guide and permission. - Inform a trusted person of your route and expected return time. - Arrange transport before arrival rather than assuming a vehicle will be available. A03Water recreation and river hazardsCheck physical hazards and fresh-water health risks before an activity.
Ask the guide about currents, rocks, water levels and safe access before any water activity. Wear suitable flotation equipment for boating. Do not dive into unfamiliar water or enter rapids to swim or bathe, and keep children under close supervision. CDC advises avoiding swimming in unchlorinated rivers, lakes and ponds in Suriname because fresh water can carry infections. A locally designated swimming spot does not establish water quality.
