Sutikamia is a small-scale, customer-oriented, and eco-friendly "back to basic" resort situated right on the edge of the traditional Saramaccan Maroon village of Botopasi.
Local rules
Guests must respect the surrounding ecosystem, local customs, and village traditions. Upon arrival, it is customary to greet one of the village captains. Leave no trace—all non-biodegradable waste should be properly managed or taken back. Swimming and bathing are welcomed in the river just like the local residents do, but always practice caution regarding river currents. Photographing local residents requires respectful permission beforehand. Modest clothing is expected when walking through the village outside the resort grounds. Connectivity & Offline Use: There is limited cellular or internet network coverage in the villages. Electricity is sustainably generated via solar panels, supplemented by oil lamps and candles during the evenings. Ensure all travel itineraries, contact details, offline maps, and translation apps are saved to your devices before leaving Paramaribo. • Access Instructions: Travel to Sutikamia is an authentic cultural journey starting the moment you board transport in Paramaribo. o By Road / Minivan: Depart Paramaribo early in the morning by local shared minivan heading south along the main highway toward Atjoni, stopping along the way at local spots. o By River Boat (Korjaal): Upon arrival at Atjoni, load supplies and board a motorized wooden dugout canoe (korjaal) for the river voyage upstream along the Upper Suriname River directly to the villages Futunakaba. • Coordinates: Upper Suriname River / Botopasi region, Sipaliwini District (approx. 4.238999,-55.4500046) Before you go • Identification & Travel Documents: Carry a valid passport or national ID, along with booking/tour confirmations. • Payment & Currency: Cash only (Surinamese Dollars - SRD, US Dollars - USD, or Euros - EUR) for extra beverages, local crafts, or bar purchases at the resort. There are no ATMs or electronic card terminals in the interior. • Packing & Gear: Bring lightweight clothing, long sleeves/pants for evenings, sturdy walking shoes, water shoes/sandals, a reliable flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries, high-DEET insect repellent, high-SPF sunscreen, and waterproof bags for electronics during the canoe ride. • Health & Safety: Bring sufficient supplies of personal prescription medications, a basic first-aid kit, and recommended anti-malaria/tropical protection for deep interior jungle travel. Drink bottled or treated drinking water provided at the resort. • Languages Spoken: Lodge hosts, guides, and local staff speak Dutch, English, Sranan Tongo, and Saramaccan.
